Cortisol

I’m sure that you’ve heard me throw around the word cortisol before, maybe you don’t really know what it is or how it works.  Let’s cover it a bit here.

Cortisol is the stress hormone.  It’s released by the adrinal gland in response to any external stressor.  In small doses, it’s not a bad thing.  But, in our modern day envirnment we’re constantly deluged with stressful stuations or things.  Traffic to and from work, work, maybe you had a lunch that wasn’t on diet, traffic home, kids acting up, the list goes on and on.  When we’re constantly under stress, this then becomes a bad thing.  Having too much cortisol in your system for too long will eventually cause inflamtion, thyroid issues, chronic depression, carb cravings immune supression, and many more issues.

So how do we deal with this?  Cleaning up your diet can incredibly help.  Cutting out grains, breads, too many starchy carbs, will make a big difference.  Getting a good fish oil, something PACKED with omega-3’s, I still recommend Stronger Faster Healthier.

Doing short, intense workouts and avoiding long, drawn out monostructural cardio(running, rowing, swimming, etc.) over long distances, will result in an acute cortisol response, the kind we’re looking for.

Meditation, prayer, breathing exercises, yoga, whatever you can do to clear your mind and release the day.

Take a probiotic.  This will aid in digestion and support your immune system.

AND SLEEP!

It effects a great deal of aspects of your life...
